Exploring the Greek Isles on Norwegian Viva: A Concierge’s Cruise Recap

Greek Isles Cruise Recap: Highlights from Santorini to Istanbul Aboard Norwegian Viva

Landing in Athens on August 16, jet-lagged but buzzing, I watched dusk cloak the Acropolis in gold—and realized this week aboard the Norwegian Viva would be a journey of friendship, sun-kissed memories, and cultural wonder.

Athens: Pre-Cruise Magic

We stayed at The Moxy Hotel—a practical and well-located spot for a quick pre-cruise explore. Our private half-day excursion included the Acropolis, the Olympic Stadium, and the changing of the guards. It was the perfect way to acclimate after an overnight flight. That evening, we dined with a sunset view of the Acropolis, and I just kept pinching myself. I'm here. In Athens. With amazing friends. Pure magic.

Travel Tip: Arrive 24–48 hours before your cruise departure to adjust to the time zone and soak in the local energy before setting sail.

All Aboard the Norwegian Viva

Norwegian Viva is luxe without being overwhelming. It's sleek and stylish, but intimate enough that you never feel lost. One of our favorite spots was the aft bar on Deck 8. Picture cozy chairs, ocean breeze, and a drink in hand as the ship glides away from port—the perfect reset after a day of exploration.

We also took advantage of Norwegian's signature dining perk—three specialty meals are included. Our favorite? Cagney's Steakhouse. From appetizers to dessert, it was exceptional.

Concierge Tip: I help my clients pre-book dining, spa services, and more so they can just show up and enjoy.

Port Highlights

Santorini

This iconic port is busy. Many excursions require the cable car to Fira, but we took a ferry to Oia instead—less crowded and equally picturesque. We shopped, dined, and captured those postcard-worthy shots against the whitewashed backdrop of the caldera.

Kusadasi

We did an Ephesus tour rich in history, biblical lore, and mythology. Walking among the ancient ruins, it's easy to feel the echoes of centuries past.

Istanbul (My Favorite!)

We had an overnight here and made the most of it. We toured the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, Basilica Cistern, and the Grand Bazaar. Lunch was surreal—hearing the call to prayer gave me goosebumps. For dinner, we dined at Frankie's overlooking the Bosphorus. The food, the view, the vibe—absolutely unforgettable. Later, we strolled and shopped in Galata, just steps from the port.

Mykonos

A close second favorite. We explored on our own, hitting the beaches near port, dining al fresco, and souvenir shopping. This port is perfect for social media content—bright colors, fun streets, and a seaside bar that served a mocktail with a bubblegum twist. Bliss.

Rhodes

An early morning kayak tour let us beat the heat and enjoy the Mediterranean serenity. The Old Town is a hidden gem—walled, historic, and filled with artisan shops. I left with three pairs of handmade leather sandals. Oops.
