Dreaming of an overwater bungalow for your honeymoon or anniversary? You don't have to travel halfway around the world to experience one.
When most people picture an overwater bungalow, they immediately think of Bora Bora or the Maldives. And honestly, I get it. The turquoise water, private decks, and those incredible views are hard to beat.
But here's something I always encourage my clients to consider: How much of your vacation do you actually want to spend getting there?
For couples traveling from the United States, destinations like Bora Bora, the Maldives, and Bali can involve long flights, multiple connections, and significant travel time. Depending on where you're staying, meals and drinks may also be an additional expense.
If you have two weeks to explore, that might be absolutely worth it.
But if you're planning a five-to-seven-night honeymoon, anniversary trip, or romantic getaway, there's another option worth considering.
Sandals Resorts offers luxurious overwater bungalows in the Caribbean, with the convenience of an adults-only, all-inclusive vacation.
Why Consider a Caribbean Overwater Bungalow?
One of the biggest advantages is getting that bucket-list experience without committing quite as much time to international travel.
At Sandals, your stay includes gourmet dining, premium drinks, airport transfers, many water sports, and personalized butler service in the overwater bungalow categories.
That means you can spend less time worrying about what everything costs once you arrive and more time actually enjoying your vacation.
And let's be clear: these accommodations are still a significant splurge. But for the right couple and occasion, they can be an unforgettable one.
1. Sandals Jamaica South Coast: For the Couple Who Wants to Completely Unplug
If you've seen photos of those gorgeous heart-shaped overwater bungalows in Jamaica, this is the resort.
Sandals Jamaica South Coast offers an incredibly romantic setting with overwater accommodations featuring glass floor panels, private outdoor soaking tubs, and hammocks suspended above the Caribbean Sea.
This is the type of experience I'd recommend for a couple celebrating a milestone anniversary or honeymoon who wants to slow down, disconnect, and enjoy some uninterrupted time together.
Best for: Couples who value privacy, romance, and a quieter atmosphere.
Starting at: $3,322 per couple, per night.
2. Sandals St. Lucia Grand Bay: For Romance With a Side of Adventure
Formerly known as Sandals Grande St. Lucian, this resort is one of my favorite options for couples who want more than just a beautiful room.
The overwater bungalows feature stunning views, glass floor panels, private outdoor soaking tubs, and butler service.
But what really sets Saint Lucia apart is the destination itself.
Think lush mountains, the famous Pitons, beautiful beaches, boat excursions, and opportunities to explore beyond the resort.
You also have access to the amenities and dining at the other Sandals resorts in Saint Lucia through the Stay at 1, Play at 3 program.
Best for: Active couples who want an incredible romantic suite but also love getting out and exploring.
Starting at: $4,086 per couple, per night.
3. Sandals Jamaica Caribbean Cay: For the Ultimate Private-Island Experience
Formerly Sandals Royal Caribbean, this resort offers something a little different.
Its overwater bungalows are situated just off the resort's private island, giving the experience an intimate, tucked-away feel.
You'll find the signature glass floors, overwater hammocks, private decks, and butler service.
For couples looking to take the experience even further, select overwater villas also feature private infinity pools.
This is an excellent option for honeymooners or couples celebrating something special who want a luxurious, private-island atmosphere.
Best for: Couples looking for privacy, personalized service, and a truly special honeymoon or anniversary experience.
Starting at: $3,692 per couple, per night.
4. Sandals Saint Vincent and the Grenadines: For Couples Who Want Something Truly Unique
If you're looking for an overwater experience that feels a little different from the traditional bungalow, Sandals Saint Vincent deserves a spot on your list.
This beautiful resort is tucked between lush green mountains and the Caribbean Sea, offering a more secluded, nature-inspired atmosphere.
Its Vincy Overwater Two-Story Villas take the experience to another level. These spacious, two-story accommodations feature glass floor panels, a private overwater deck with a floating daybed, and an incredible upper-level terrace overlooking the water.
You'll also enjoy personalized butler service, in-room dining, and all the benefits of Sandals' adults-only, all-inclusive experience.
What I especially love about Saint Vincent is that the destination still feels a little more undiscovered than some of the Caribbean's better-known vacation spots. It's a wonderful option for couples who want a luxurious honeymoon or anniversary celebration with a sense of adventure.
Best for: Couples who appreciate privacy, beautiful natural surroundings, and a more distinctive luxury experience.
Starting at: $3,118 per couple, per night.
Are Sandals Overwater Bungalows Worth the Price?
That depends on what matters most to you.
If you're someone who spends very little time in your room and prefers to be out exploring from morning until night, I might actually recommend investing in a beautiful beachfront or swim-up suite instead.
But if your dream vacation includes slow mornings, breakfast on your private deck, watching the water beneath your feet, and enjoying the luxury of having your own butler, an overwater bungalow could be worth every penny.
Here's another idea I love: You don't necessarily have to spend your entire vacation in one.
For some couples, booking a traditional suite for the first portion of the trip and finishing with two or three nights in an overwater bungalow can be a wonderful way to experience both.
Which Overwater Bungalow Is Right for You?
That's where working with someone who knows the differences between these resorts becomes especially valuable.
The room itself is only one piece of the experience. The resort atmosphere, destination, flights, activities, and even how you like to spend your mornings all matter.
I've spent more than a decade helping couples plan honeymoons, anniversaries, and luxury Caribbean vacations, and I always believe the best resort isn't necessarily the most expensive one.
It's the one that fits the way you actually want to travel.
Thinking about an overwater bungalow for your honeymoon, anniversary, or next big celebration?
I'd love to help you compare the options and create a vacation that's worth the splurge.
